How Do I Use the Lesson Plans?

Read this lesson plan before class to familiarize yourself with the ideas and concepts you’ll be teaching the students. You may print this page out if you need to use it as a reference point during live classes.

This lesson is a guide, but feel free to expand on the content or decrease/increase what you teach depending on the learning levels of the students in your class or the amount of time you have to cover the material.

Can I show videos in live classes?

Yes, feel free to include additional material to supplement the class lesson material. Videos, Physical Objects, Games, Activities, etc. are okay to share in live classes.

Videos should have no advertisements or logos and should be viewed by you before showing them to the students to ensure no offensive or questionable content is included.

The video should make up only a small portion of the live class.

How do bookmarks work?

Bookmarks help you keep track of lessons you’re going to teach in future live classes. The bookmarks you see are for all your bookmarked lessons across all grades.

You can bookmark a lesson by visiting the lesson you want to bookmark and clicking the “bookmark” button in the bookmark section.

You can remove a single bookmark by visiting a lesson you’ve bookmarked and clicking the “bookmark” button again to unbookmark it.

You can clear all of your bookmarks by clicking the “clear all bookmarks” button. Be careful, this will erase all of your bookmarks.

Class Summary

Reinforcing the reading/phonics lesson that teaches about the letter. Students should leave the class feeling comfortable with the concept of what the uppercase and lowercase letter look like. They should be able to write the letter. They should know what sounds the letter makes. They should also be able to name things that start with the letter.

Main Teaching Points

  • Draw or Show: objects you’ve prepared that start with the letter.
  • Draw or Show: The Letter  (upper case) for the students to see.
  • Draw or Show: The Letter (lower case) for the students to see.
  • Sing or Read: A song or poem with the class that features the letter  and helps them to practice the sounds that the letter  makes.

Discussion Questions

  • Who knows what this letter is called?
  • Is this uppercase or lowercase Letter?
  • What sounds does this letter make?
  • What is your letter object for show and tell called? Tell the class about it.

In-Class Activities

  • Play Letter  category: Have students take turns naming things that start with the letter. If players name something that does not start with the letter  they are out of the game. Play 2 rounds and then declare the winners. (More than one winner is fine.) Make sure to thank everyone for playing the game with you and clap for all of the students because they did a good job participating. (This will leave everyone feeling like a winner even if they didn’t make it to the final round.)
  • Air Writing: Ask the students to show how to write the letter using their hands in the air. Note: air writing may appear reversed to you as instructor.
  • Starts with a _: Encourage students to play a game where the you say the letter sound aloud and prompts students to name a few example words that start OR end with the letter.
