Activity 1 – Reading Chapter 22 Part 1: Pages 172-176 (20 minutes):
Open the story in the Bookclub bookcase and have students take turns reading. Assign character roles if appropriate.
Activity 2 – Discussion (10 minutes):
Ask students the following questions:
- “Why did Mr. Zuckerman hang the medal over the pigpen?”
- “How does Wilbur feel when he returns to the barn with Charlotte’s egg sac? What does this reveal about his character?”
- “How often does Wilbur look at Charlotte’s old web? Why?”
- “Why does Templeton Wilbur three times a day even in the winter?”
- “The narrator says ‘All winter Wilbur watched over Charlotte’s egg sac as though he were guarding his own children.’ Why does Wilbur do this?”
Assessment:
Assess student understanding of the story’s moral through participation in discussions, completion of reflection questions, and identification of key concepts presented.
