Activity 1 – Reading Chapter 20 (15 minutes):

Open the story in the Bookclub bookcase and have students take turns reading. Assign character roles if appropriate.

Activity 2 – Discussion (10 minutes):

Ask students the following questions:

  • “Why does the narrator call this Charlotte’s ‘hour of triumph’?”
  • “Why did the judges give Wilbur a special award? (Page 157)”
  • “How do the different characters feel as Wilbur is presented for the special award? How do their emotions reflect their personalities? (e.g. Avery, Arables, Zukermans, Lurvy, Wilbur, Templeton)”
  • “What prizes did Wilbur receive?”
  • “Why do you think Templeton helped Wilbur after Wilbur fainted?”
  • “How did the Zuckerman and the Arables feel after the judge gave Mr. Zuckerman the prizes?”
  • “How does Wilbur respond when he wins the prize at the fair?”

Assessment:

Assess student understanding of the story’s moral through participation in discussions, completion of reflection questions, and identification of key concepts presented.
