How Do I Use the FreeNode?

Read this lesson plan before class to familiarize yourself with the ideas and concepts you’ll be teaching the students. You may print this page out if you need to use it as a reference point during live classes.

This lesson is a guide, but feel free to expand on the content or decrease/increase what you teach depending on the learning levels of the students in your class or the amount of time you have to cover the material.

Can I show videos in FN classes?

Yes, feel free to include additional material to supplement the class lesson material. Videos, Physical Objects, Games, Activities, etc. are okay to share in live classes.

Videos should have no advertisements or logos and should be viewed by you before showing them to the students to ensure no offensive or questionable content is included.

The video should make up only 1-3 minutes of the live class and should not take the place of instructor-led instruction. Videos should be supplementary only.

How do bookmarks work?

Bookmarks help you keep track of lessons you’re going to teach in future live classes. The bookmarks you see are for all your bookmarked lessons across all grades.

You can bookmark a lesson by visiting the lesson you want to bookmark and clicking the “bookmark” button in the bookmark section.

You can remove a single bookmark by visiting a lesson you’ve bookmarked and clicking the “bookmark” button again to unbookmark it.

Objectives:

Understand the concept of natural disasters and their various types.
Explore the characteristics of landslides, why they are dangerous, and preventive measures.

Familiarize students with safety measures during floods and landslides.

Introduction (3 minutes):

Define natural disasters as catastrophic events caused by natural processes on Earth.
List various types of natural disasters: floods, earthquakes, hurricanes, tornadoes, landslides, etc.
Highlight the importance of understanding and preparing for natural disasters.

Activity 1 – What is a Landslide? (8 minutes):

Define a landslide as a geological event where loose rocks, soil, or debris move down a slope due to gravity. Discuss common causes of landslides: storms, heavy rains, earthquakes, volcanic activity, and human activities. Emphasize the sudden and forceful nature of landslides, posing significant danger. Explain the destructive potential of landslides, including damage to property, roads, and the risk to lives. (Optional) Show images or videos of real-life landslide and flood incidents.


Activity 2 – What is a Flood? (8 minutes):

Define a flood as an overflowing of water onto land, caused by heavy rains, melting snow, storm surges, or dam bursts. Share a real-life example, like the Big Thompson River flood disaster of 1976. Discuss the impact of floods on communities, infrastructure, and the environment. Explain that a mudslide is the downward movement of water-soaked land. Describe how heavy rain and floods saturate the ground, making it prone to sliding. Discuss the aftermath of mudslides, including blocking rivers and worsening flooding.


Activity 3 – Safety Measures During Landslides and Floods (8 minutes):

Introduce preventive measures: avoiding steep slopes, monitoring warning signs, and evacuation. Provide practical tips for staying safe during landslides and floods. Emphasize the importance of early warnings and preparedness. Discuss evacuation plans, emergency supplies, and staying informed through weather alerts.


Conclusion (3 minutes):

Summarize key points: landslides, floods, their dangers, and safety measures.
Encourage students to discuss the importance of community preparedness and responsible land use.
