Activity 1 – Reading Chapter 17 (15 minutes):

Open the story in the Bookclub bookcase and have students take turns reading. Assign character roles if appropriate.

Activity 2 – Discussion (10 minutes):

Ask students the following questions:

  • “How does the author describe the fair?”
  • “How do Fern and Avery react to the sights and sounds of the fair? What does this tell us about their personalities?”
  • “How do Mr. and Mrs. Arable’s reactions to letting Fern and Avery explore the fair reflect the themes of independence and growing up?”
  • “How does Wilbur feel about being at the fair and competing against Uncle? How does this affect his behavior and thoughts?”
  • “How does Charlotte’s determination to help Wilbur, despite her own tiredness, highlight the theme of friendship in the story?”
