Theocratic Connections:
This chapter explores the character’s preparation for the fair. Since we prepare for everything from commenting to conducting Bible studies, encourage the students to consider the following video and article after class:
Activity 1 – Reading Chapter 16 Part 2: Pages 124-129 (15 minutes):
Open the story in the Bookclub bookcase and have students take turns reading the rest of the chapter. Assign character roles if appropriate.
Activity 2 – Discussion (10 minutes):
Ask students the following questions:
- “Why does the old sheep tell Wilbur to struggle when they put him in the crate?”
- “Why did Wilbur Faint?“
- “Even though Wilbur has had special webs made for him and brought extra money to the farm, Mr. Arable still talks about killing him. Why is that?“
- “Have you ever prepared for an important event like Wilbur is preparing for the fair? How did you feel, and what did you do to get ready?”
- “What do you think will happen at the fair? How might it change the course of the story?“
- “Do you think Wilbur has a good chance of winning a prize at the fair? Why or why not?”
Assessment:
Assess student understanding of the story’s moral through participation in discussions, completion of reflection questions, and identification of key concepts presented.
