Activity 1 – Reading Chapter 14 Part 2: Pages 109-112 (15 minutes):
Open the story in the Bookclub bookcase and have students take turns reading the rest of the chapter. Assign character roles if appropriate.
Activity 2 – Discussion (10 minutes):
Ask students the following questions:
- “Dr. Dorian says”I don’t understand how a spider learned to spin a web in the first place. When the words appeared, everyone said they were a miracle. But no body pointed out that the web itself is a miracle.” What does he mean by that?”
- “What do you think of Dr. Dorian? Is he similar or different from the doctors you’ve met?
- “If you were Mrs. Arable, who would you be more worried about, Fern or Avery? Why?“
- “Based on Dr. Dorian’s insights, what do you think will happen next in the story? How will his views influence the other characters?”
