This lesson is a guide, but feel free to expand on the content or decrease/increase what you teach depending on the learning levels of the students in your class or the amount of time you have to cover the material.

Can I show videos in FN classes?

Yes, feel free to include additional material to supplement the class lesson material. Videos, Physical Objects, Games, Activities, etc. are okay to share in live classes.

Videos should have no advertisements or logos and should be viewed by you before showing them to the students to ensure no offensive or questionable content is included.

The video should make up only 1-3 minutes of the live class and should not take the place of instructor-led instruction. Videos should be supplementary only.

How do bookmarks work?

Bookmarks help you keep track of lessons you’re going to teach in future live classes. The bookmarks you see are for all your bookmarked lessons across all grades.

You can bookmark a lesson by visiting the lesson you want to bookmark and clicking the “bookmark” button in the bookmark section.

You can remove a single bookmark by visiting a lesson you’ve bookmarked and clicking the “bookmark” button again to unbookmark it.

Class Lesson Plan

Objectives:

Students will understand the concept of vowel diphthongs, focusing on the sounds ‘ou’ and ‘oi’.
Students will learn to identify and pronounce words containing the diphthongs ‘ou’, ‘ow’, ‘oi’, and ‘oy’.
Students will practice breaking down words into syllables to aid in reading and pronunciation.

Introduction (5 minutes):

Review the concept of syllables and demonstrate how clapping can help identify the syllables in a word. Define what a diphthong is: when a vowel is paired with a consonant letter to create a new sound. Focus on the ‘ou’ and ‘oi’ diphthongs, explaining that these combinations make unique sounds. Use examples such as the words foil,enjoy and loud.

Discuss how understanding how to pronounce vowel diphthongs can aid in Bible reading.


Activity 1 – Introduction to Diphthongs  (7 minutes):

Present examples of words with ‘ou’, ‘ow’, ‘oi’, and ‘oy’ diphthongs on the whiteboard.
Practice pronouncing these words as a class and identify the unique sounds created by each diphthong.


Activity 2 – Reading and Writing Practice (15 minutes):

Have students take turns reading the words containing ‘ou’, ‘ow’, ‘oi’, and ‘oy’ diphthongs aloud, emphasizing the correct pronunciations. Encourage students to write sentences using these words to reinforce understanding.


Conclusion (2 minutes):

Summarize key points: A diphthong is when a vowel is paired with a consonant letter to create a new sound, forming unique sounds like ‘ou’ and ‘oi’. Understanding syllables can aid in reading and pronouncing challenging words, especially in Bible reading.


Assessment:
