This lesson is a guide, but feel free to expand on the content or decrease/increase what you teach depending on the learning levels of the students in your class or the amount of time you have to cover the material.

Can I show videos in FN classes?

Yes, feel free to include additional material to supplement the class lesson material. Videos, Physical Objects, Games, Activities, etc. are okay to share in live classes.

Videos should have no advertisements or logos and should be viewed by you before showing them to the students to ensure no offensive or questionable content is included.

The video should make up only 1-3 minutes of the live class and should not take the place of instructor-led instruction. Videos should be supplementary only.

How do bookmarks work?

Bookmarks help you keep track of lessons you’re going to teach in future live classes. The bookmarks you see are for all your bookmarked lessons across all grades.

You can bookmark a lesson by visiting the lesson you want to bookmark and clicking the “bookmark” button in the bookmark section.

You can remove a single bookmark by visiting a lesson you’ve bookmarked and clicking the “bookmark” button again to unbookmark it.

Class Lesson Plan

Objectives:

Students will understand vowel variants that produce the short o or “aw” sound and the letter combinations that create them.
Students will recognize and use the vowel teams o, au, aw, a(l), au(gh), and ough to create words.
Students will practice reading and writing words with these vowel variants in their spelling list.

Introduction (5 minutes):

Introduce vowel variants or vowel teams as two letters working together to create a new sound, focusing on the “oo” sound.
Explain that today’s lesson will explore words with oo, ew, ue, and ui that produce the “oo” sound.

Recognizing vowel variants and their sounds can help in understanding the pronunciation of names and places in the Bible.


Activity 1 – Understanding Vowel Variants (7 minutes):

Present examples of words with o, au, aw, al, au(gh), and ough on the whiteboard. Practice pronouncing and identifying the vowel variants that make the “aw” sound.


Activity 2 – Identifying “aw” Sound Words  (7 minutes):

Show examples of words with o, au, aw, al, au(gh), and ough and discuss their meanings. Practice identifying and categorizing words based on the vowel variants that create the “aw” sound.


Activity 3 – Reading and Writing Practice (7 minutes):

Present sentences with words containing o, au, aw, al, au(gh), and ough. (You can create sentences and/or use biblical examples.) Practice reading these sentences aloud and writing them, focusing on the correct pronunciation and spelling of the vowel variants.


Conclusion (2 minutes):

Summarize key points: Vowel variants are created by various letter combinations that produce the short o or “aw” sound. We focused on the variants o, au, aw, al, au(gh), and ough today, learning how they generate the “aw” sound. Encourage students to practice reading and writing words with these vowel variants to reinforce their understanding.


Assessment:

Informally assess students through participation in vowel variant identification activities, their ability to read and write words with these variants, and their understanding of the “aw” sound.
