This lesson is a guide, but feel free to expand on the content or decrease/increase what you teach depending on the learning levels of the students in your class or the amount of time you have to cover the material.

Can I show videos in FN classes?

Yes, feel free to include additional material to supplement the class lesson material. Videos, Physical Objects, Games, Activities, etc. are okay to share in live classes.

Videos should have no advertisements or logos and should be viewed by you before showing them to the students to ensure no offensive or questionable content is included.

The video should make up only 1-3 minutes of the live class and should not take the place of instructor-led instruction. Videos should be supplementary only.

How do bookmarks work?

Bookmarks help you keep track of lessons you’re going to teach in future live classes. The bookmarks you see are for all your bookmarked lessons across all grades.

You can bookmark a lesson by visiting the lesson you want to bookmark and clicking the “bookmark” button in the bookmark section.

Class Lesson Plan

Objectives:

Students will understand the concept of r-controlled vowels that make the “ur” sound.
Students will recognize and pronounce words containing r-controlled vowels: er, ir, ur, or, ear.
Students will practice reading and writing words with r-controlled vowels in their spelling words.

Introduction (5 minutes):

Review the concept of r-controlled vowels as vowels that change their sound when followed by the letter “r.”
Explain that today’s focus is on words with r-controlled vowels that make the “ur” sound.


Theocratic Connections:

Discuss how understanding vowel sounds can aid in reading challenging words in the Bible, referencing examples from passages with difficult names or terms.


Activity 1 – Introduction to r-Controlled Vowels (7 minutes):

Present examples of words with er, ir, ur, or, and ear patterns on the whiteboard.
Practice pronouncing these words as a class, emphasizing the “ur” sound created by the presence of the letter “r.”


Activity 2 – Reading, Writing, and Pronunciation Practice (16 minutes):

Use the Spelling List of words containing r-controlled vowels. Have students take turns reading the words aloud, focusing on correct pronunciation and identifying the r-controlled vowel patterns.

Encourage students to write sentences using words with er, ir, ur, or, and ear patterns.
Provide support as needed and emphasize the correct pronunciation of r-controlled vowels in their writing.


Conclusion (2 minutes):

Summarize key points: R-controlled vowels occur when the letter “r” follows a vowel, changing its sound to “ur.” We focused on recognizing and pronouncing words with er, ir, ur, or, and ear patterns today.

Remind students to practice reading and writing words with r-controlled vowels to reinforce their understanding.


Assessment:

Informally assess students through participation in reading and writing activities, their ability to pronounce words with r-controlled vowels accurately, and their written sentences using words with the learned patterns.
