This lesson is a guide, but feel free to expand on the content or decrease/increase what you teach depending on the learning levels of the students in your class or the amount of time you have to cover the material.

Can I show videos in FN classes?

Yes, feel free to include additional material to supplement the class lesson material. Videos, Physical Objects, Games, Activities, etc. are okay to share in live classes.

Videos should have no advertisements or logos and should be viewed by you before showing them to the students to ensure no offensive or questionable content is included.

The video should make up only 1-3 minutes of the live class and should not take the place of instructor-led instruction. Videos should be supplementary only.

How do bookmarks work?

Bookmarks help you keep track of lessons you’re going to teach in future live classes. The bookmarks you see are for all your bookmarked lessons across all grades.

You can bookmark a lesson by visiting the lesson you want to bookmark and clicking the “bookmark” button in the bookmark section.

You can remove a single bookmark by visiting a lesson you’ve bookmarked and clicking the “bookmark” button again to unbookmark it.

You can clear all of your bookmarks by clicking the “clear all bookmarks” button. Be careful, this will erase all of your bookmarks.

Class Lesson Plan

Objectives:

Students will understand the sounds of the consonants c and g, as well as the -ge and -dge word endings.
Students will recognize and pronounce words containing the soft and hard c sounds, as well as words with -ge and -dge endings.
Students will practice reading and writing words with these consonant sounds and word endings.

Introduction (5 minutes):

Review the concept of consonants as letters that are not vowels.
Introduce the sounds of the consonants c and g, focusing on the soft and hard sounds of c and the different sound of g when part of a digraph or trigraph.
Explain the -ge and -dge word endings and their pronunciation.


Theocratic Connections:

Discuss how understanding different sounds of consonants can aid in reading challenging words in the Bible, referencing examples from passages with difficult names or terms.


Activity 1 – Introduction to Consonant Sounds (7 minutes):

Present examples of words with soft and hard c sounds on the whiteboard.
Practice pronouncing these words as a class and identify the letters that determine the sound of c.


Activity 2 – Digraph and Trigraph Practice (7 minutes):

Present examples of words with -ge and -dge endings on the whiteboard.
Practice pronouncing these words as a class and emphasize the digraph and trigraph sounds created by ge and dge.


Activity 3 – Reading and Writing Practice (9 minutes):

Use the Spelling List of words containing soft and hard c sounds, as well as words with -ge and -dge endings.
Have students take turns reading the words aloud, focusing on correct pronunciation.
Encourage students to write sentences using these words to reinforce understanding.


Conclusion (2 minutes):

Summarize key points: The consonants c and g can have different sounds depending on the letters that follow them. We focused on the soft and hard c sounds, as well as the -ge and -dge word endings today.

Remind students to practice reading and writing words with these consonant sounds and word endings to reinforce their understanding.


Assessment:

Informally assess students through participation in reading and writing activities, their ability to pronounce words with soft and hard c sounds accurately, and their written sentences using words with the learned sounds and endings.
