1G4/1G5 – Roots and Stems

How do live lessons work?

Live lessons are interactive slides and course outlines that are used to teach Treeway Live Classes. Click on the arrows to navigate backward and forwards through the slides.

How Do I Use the Lesson Plans?

Read this lesson plan before class to familiarize yourself with the ideas and concepts you’ll be teaching the students. You may print this page out if you need to use it as a reference point during live classes.

This lesson is a guide, but feel free to expand on the content or decrease/increase what you teach depending on the learning levels of the students in your class or the amount of time you have to cover the material.

Can I show videos in live classes?

Yes, feel free to include additional material to supplement the class lesson material. Videos, Physical Objects, Games, Activities, etc. are okay to share in live classes.

Videos should have no advertisements or logos and should be viewed by you before showing them to the students to ensure no offensive or questionable content is included.

The video should make up only a small portion of the live class.

How do bookmarks work?

Bookmarks help you keep track of lessons you’re going to teach in future live classes. The bookmarks you see are for all your bookmarked lessons across all grades.

You can bookmark a lesson by visiting the lesson you want to bookmark and clicking the “bookmark” button in the bookmark section.

You can remove a single bookmark by visiting a lesson you’ve bookmarked and clicking the “bookmark” button again to unbookmark it.

You can clear all of your bookmarks by clicking the “clear all bookmarks” button. Be careful, this will erase all of your bookmarks.

Log in to save bookmarks.

Class Summary

Children should understand that plants need roots to survive. Stems & roots both hold plants up and help in the delivery and storage of food.

1G4/1G5 – Roots and Stems

Main Teaching Points

  • Present: Bring roots from different plants. Some edible, some small, some large, etc.
  • Explain: Roots & stem help plants to stay up. Roots grow down into the ground. There are 2 types of roots: taproot and fibrous roots. Roots suck up water and nutrients, they travel through the stem. Roots and stem help the plant make food.
  • Explain: Some roots we can eat, Jehovah gave them as food. Some roots we don’t eat. Some roots are used as spices like ginger.
  • Engage: Make a T table on the white board, half tap roots half fibrous roots. Encourage students to sort the roots into the right categories & write the answers they give in the table.

Discussion Questions

  • Why do plants need roots?
  • Do all root systems look alike?
  • Can anyone tell me what part of the plant that these are?
  • Have you ever eaten a root? Which ones?
  • How do you think a root absorbs water? Why would it need to do this?
  • Why is it important for the roots to anchor a plant to the ground?

In-Class Activities

  • Color Stems: Encourage students & parents to try an experiment: Take a piece of celery, asparagus, and a flower. Take three plastic cups and fill them up with water. Then you will place six drops of food coloring into each cup. Then place each stem into a different cup. The stems will need to soak over night in the colored water. Record what happens to each plant. Photos of the results should be shared in the Grade 1 Class Group for other to students see.
  • Taste Test: Root vegetables for tasting at home (suggestions: carrots, parsnips, potatoes, radishes, beets, turnips,
ginger) Which do you like the best? Write it down! Photos of the results should be shared in the Grade 1 Class Group for other to students see.
