1G20 – Place Value

How do live lessons work?

Live lessons are interactive slides and course outlines that are used to teach Treeway Live Classes. Click on the arrows to navigate backward and forwards through the slides.

How Do I Use the Lesson Plans?

Read this lesson plan before class to familiarize yourself with the ideas and concepts you’ll be teaching the students. You may print this page out if you need to use it as a reference point during live classes.

This lesson is a guide, but feel free to expand on the content or decrease/increase what you teach depending on the learning levels of the students in your class or the amount of time you have to cover the material.

Can I show videos in live classes?

Yes, feel free to include additional material to supplement the class lesson material. Videos, Physical Objects, Games, Activities, etc. are okay to share in live classes.

Videos should have no advertisements or logos and should be viewed by you before showing them to the students to ensure no offensive or questionable content is included.

The video should make up only a small portion of the live class.

How do bookmarks work?

Bookmarks help you keep track of lessons you’re going to teach in future live classes. The bookmarks you see are for all your bookmarked lessons across all grades.

You can bookmark a lesson by visiting the lesson you want to bookmark and clicking the “bookmark” button in the bookmark section.

You can remove a single bookmark by visiting a lesson you’ve bookmarked and clicking the “bookmark” button again to unbookmark it.

You can clear all of your bookmarks by clicking the “clear all bookmarks” button. Be careful, this will erase all of your bookmarks.

Log in to save bookmarks.

1G20 – Place Value

Main Teaching Points

  • Show: Place Value
  • Ask: What are digits?
  • Ask: What is value?
  • Help: Learn how to place numbers on a place value chart.

Discussion Questions

  • What digit is in the ones place in the number ____?
  • What is the value of that digit?
  • What digit is in the tens place?
  • What is the value of that digit?

In-Class Activities

  • Groups of Ten: Use lego or beans to make groups of ten
  • Place Value Uno: Play this game with Uno cards or a classic deck with face cards removed. Make 6 equal decks, divide the 6 decks into 2 rows. Line the decks up, 3 decks and 3 decks with a space in the middle for playing. (Depending on which place values you’re working on. If you are working on tens then you only need 4  decks divided into 2 on each side.) Each player has a 3 of piles  and lays down the top card from each. The players say the resulting numbers out loud (e.g. “five hundred thirty”) and the player with the highest number wins.
